This guide includes information on understanding sexual orientation and gender identity, creating a safe space for LGBTQ+ participants, community integration, and on providing direct services, legal services, and mental health services to LGBTQ+ clients. By acknowledging the unique circumstances under which LGBT refugees arrive and considering how their backgrounds and experiences will inform each service, interaction, and referral, service providers will successfully respond to a refugee community that has for too long been hidden.
