Employment Authorization Documents: Reference Guide for Refugee Service Providers

This toolkit was updated in April 2022 to reflect new guidance from the U.S. government. Refugees and asylees have the right to work. This reference guide covers the most important and commonly used work authorization documents required for employment in the United States. It includes information on the form I-9, accepted documents typically held by ORR-eligible clients, possible combinations of documents based on immigration status, FAQs, and a list of resources to share with employers. Immigration statuses discussed include: refugee, asylee, Cuban/Haitian entrant, Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) holder, Amerasian, and certified Victim of Trafficking, Special Immigrant Legal Permanent Resident (SI LPR), Special Immigrant Conditional Permanent Resident (SI CPR), Special Immigrant Parolee (SI Parolee), and Non-Special Immigrant Parolee (Non-SI Parolee).
