Serving Haitian Newcomers: A Practical Guide to Cultural and Gender-Aware Considerations

This toolkit, developed by HIAS,  is designed to enhance service providers’ understandings of gender awareness and specific cultural considerations when supporting Haitian Newcomers. It is intended to enhance the capacity to provide person- centered, trauma-informed services within the resettlement context. The information contained in this toolkit was generated from HIAS’s cultural advisors who recommended areas of attention that service providers should bear in mind to ensure culturally and linguistically responsive services. The United States and Haiti share many commonalities and yet also have different social and cultural norms, along with differing gender dynamics, role expectations, and expectations of behavior.
