Navigating U.S. Resettlement Systems to Support Afghan Newcomers

Are Afghan newcomers considered refugees? What is the difference, and why does it matter? What systems are currently in place to support these newcomers?It can be challenging to make sense of these questions and how the answers impact the day-to-day lives of Afghan newcomers.

This workshop will provide a brief overview of the recent Afghan evacuation, the complexities of resettlement, and the systems that you may be called on to navigate in your role as a helper.This workshop is recommended for volunteers, community leaders, professional helpers, and others committed to fostering a welcoming environment for Afghan newcomers.

This training will be facilitated byWalaa Jumma, MSW.Walaa has dedicated her career to working alongside refugees and asylum seekers in navigating systematic barriers and accessing opportunities. Walaa has worked as a Civil Rights Analyst with the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and Program Consultant with USCCB. It was there that she developed an Emergency Education Curriculum for Humanitarian Parolees. Walaa received her Master’s from the University of Chicago in Social Work, Social Policy &; Global Social Development.

She is fluent in Arabic and English.
