Fundamentals of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) for Refugee Service Providers: What Does a Culturally Responsive Approach Mean?

Hosted on July 7, 2020, this webinar was presented by Reema Sharma, Manager of Outreach and Community Education, Womankind; and Alena Victor, Director of Residential Programs, Womankind.

There has been a growing interest among refugee service providers in understanding the dynamics of gender-based violence (including domestic violence and sexual violence). This webinar will be an opportunity to hear from a local, culturally specific organization, Womankind, learn the basics of understanding and recognizing gender-based violence (GBV) within refugee and immigrant communities, and explore what a culturally responsive approach to GBV services can look like.

By the end of this webinar, you will be able to:

  • Define gender-based violence (GBV) and describe the multiple ways it manifests;
  • Describe the importance of survivor-centered and trauma-informed approaches;
  • Identify common GBV flags within a family dynamic; and
  • Name basic steps for determining appropriate support.
